The Art of the Mash-Up

My work is all about the juxtaposition of ideologies. I mash-up contemporary mediums - digital technology, film, music and advertising - with the more traditional such as sculpture and painting, to form a new type of communication. Mixing film language with sculptural language – placing technology inside sculptures, lettering, writing, rusting, scratching – it’s encouraging the re-cognition of materials.

My practice seeks answers to some of my own internal questions and those which characterise 21st Century living. Multiple identities, transformation, connection, re-connection and shifting landscapes are what preoccupy me. The work makes environmental statements, capturing and interrupting different landscapes, confronting urban and rural spaces. It also engages and brings people together, creating new experiences and fresh perspectives.

The two binding elements to all these creative experiments is the human figure - how it’s represented, defined, decorated, where it’s placed, the environment it sits in and its’ identity - and drawing. Drawing is the cornerstone and the base. It never starts with the pixel. It always starts with a pencil."
